The monastery of San Juan de Caaveiro is located in the Fragas del Eume Natural Park. The complex was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1975 and is owned by the Provincial Council of A Coruña.
The oldest remains date to the 12th century. The church rises on a steep hillock, with high walls, buttresses and underground chambers. The Romanesque apse and nave survive in good condition, as does a beautiful 18th-century Baroque bell tower by Simón Rodríguez's school.
The monastery was founded in 934, belonging first to the Benedictine order, then the Augustinian order in the 12th century. Its domain peaked between 1220 and 1259, with more than fifteen parishes under its jurisdiction.
Its church became a Royal Collegiate Church with six canons until the late 18th century, after which it fell into decline. The Provincial Council began restoring it in 2003 and today organises guided tours.
