The Fragas del Eume Natural Park was created on 30 July 1997 and protects 9,126 hectares along the banks of the River Eume, in the municipalities of Cabañas, A Capela, Monfero, Pontedeume and As Pontes de García Rodríguez, in the province of A Coruña.
Within the park there are numerous traces of human activity: charcoal kilns, stone crosses, bridges and traditional-architecture sanctuaries.
The most prominent are the medieval monasteries of Monfero and Caaveiro. Caaveiro Monastery was established in 934 to shelter the local hermits and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1975.
The origins of Monfero Monastery date back to the 10th century. With the exception of the church, the remaining buildings are in a ruinous state, though partial restoration is underway.
Various hiking routes allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of the landscapes and the extraordinary biodiversity of the park.
